We demolished the old brick building on the Clementina side. During the 1906 fire, the roof burned off, but the brick walls were still standing. The old timers just filled the basement with debris and poured a new floor right over it! They set their new foundations right on the rubble of the old foundations. We found fancy ornamental brick in the infill cavities left from the 1880 building and one 1873 penny.
An existing 25,000 sq.ft. brick building facing Folsom St. got a full seismic upgrade and two new stories on top; we tore down the building in the rear yard facing Clementina alley, and it got a new three story, 15,000 sq.ft. steel building over a concrete pedestal parking garage. Originally designed as condominium units, the project changed directions in midstream hoping to cash in on the dot com boom. The Folsom side is now the Mexican Consulate. The interiors feature sand-blasted timber, exposed steel stairs and rails, bamboo flooring and large expanses of glass.
